Novell Announces NetWare FLex/IP
Cost Effective TCP/IP Services for UNIX Connectivity
SAN JOSE, California -- May 11, 1992 -- Novell, Inc. today announced
NetWare FLeX/IP, a product that meets the need of users to share printers
cost effectively across NetWare and UNIX environments. In addition to
its full-featured, bidirectional print gateway, NetWare FLeX/IP also
provides FTP file transfer services and an X Window System console utility
for remote NetWare server management.
"This product has actually been defined by customers who have benefited
from integrating their NetWare and UNIX file systems through NetWare NFS,
and are now asking for a cost-effective way to integrate their NetWare and
UNIX printers over large numbers of servers throughout their
organizations," said Bob Davis, director of marketing for Novell's UNIX
connectivity products. "We believe that by expanding the range of
products addressing mixed UNIX and NetWare environments, Novell will
facilitate the growth of enterprise networks based on these technologies."
Implemented as a set of NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) loaded on a
NetWare server, NetWare FLeX/IP requires no additional software on the
UNIX systems. It allows UNIX users to access NetWare resources from their
native UNIX environment.
Bidirectional Print Gateway
The bidirectional print gateway allows UNIX users to access printers
attached to NetWare systems and NetWare users to access printers that are
attached to UNIX systems. NetWare users are able to use standard NetWare
print utilities to access the printer on the UNIX systems. The UNIX
printer will appear to the user as a normal NetWare print queue, while the
NetWare queues will appear as UNIX print queues to the UNIX user. In
addition, the UNIX print filter mechanism is supported enabling print jobs
to be preprocessed before submission to the printer device.
FTP Server
The high-performance FTP server allows UNIX users to transfer files to and
from NetWare v3.11 servers on the network. It also enables FTP clients to
use the NetWare v3.11 server as an FTP gateway to access any other NetWare
server on the network, including those that do not support TCP/IP. The
FTP server provides full support of both UNIX/NFS and DOS name spaces.
Users can choose their preferred view of the file system and toggle this
view at will.
Remote X Console
The X11 remote console allows network administrators to manage NetWare
v3.11 servers from any X Window System. The XCONSOLE is a NetWare
Loadable Module that displays NetWare v3.11 console screens using X
Windows on a remote UNIX workstation. The UNIX administrator benefits by
having the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot NetWare v3.11
servers using their native UNIX-based graphical user interface. The
XCONSOLE provides additional management functionality by allowing multiple
NetWare management screens to be displayed at one time from multiple
NetWare servers.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare FLeX/IP will begin shipping by the end of May. It will be priced
at $1,995. NetWare FLeX/IP will be available through certified Novell
Gold and Platinum resellers.
